The CBI has registered a case against 24 individuals, including government officials, for their alleged involvement in issuing passports based on counterfeit documents. In the course of their operations, the CBI has apprehended an official stationed in Gangtok and a middleman. Furthermore, CBI detectives are continuing their searches not only at the passport office in Kolkata but also at various sites in Salt Lake and Howrah.

In an unexpected move, the CBI carried out a raid at the home of an individual in Uluberia, Howrah district, during the early hours of Saturday. This person was subjected to questioning for nearly six hours, following which the CBI agents took him into their custody. According to an officer, “The man is an employee of the passport office. We raided his residence in Uluberia this morning and grilled him”, official said.
The First Information Report (FIR) lists a total of 24 individuals, including 16 officials, who are alleged to have been involved in the issuance of passports to ineligible individuals, including non-residents, based on fraudulent documents in exchange for bribes. These search operations are being conducted across various locations, including Kolkata, Siliguri, Gangtok, and others.
